At some point, if you create, you collect; so long as deals are in place to act on your behalf by assignment, license or other appointment. If you are a songwriter, that could be through a Music Publisher. If you are a recording Artist, that could be through a Record Company. If you are a Record Producer then you should also have and agreement and be due a royalty. There are also many types of override percentages or residual amounts that might be due. The situations and complexity can vary greatly.
So how do you know that the royalty statement process is effective and accurate and that all the contractual provisions are being honoured and implemented correctly? To be totally certain in all areas, you would instigate a royalty audit including a thorough analysis of all income streams and royalties payable. This is the most complete and inclusive approach to checking royalties and includes a site visit inspection of the relevant books and records of the company, assignee, agent or licensee.
Costs can vary greatly and are dependent upon a range of factors. To talk through the process and any specific requirements or concerns that you may have then please call for further information. Please note that no work is undertaken on a contingency basis.
